The Copper Key Swale is a simpler alternative to the double bridle. This design works by featuring movable rings above the mouthpiece and by creating leverage on the shanks. The swale bit can be used with two reins, one on the loose rings which will offer slightly softer support and the other on the bottom ring for leverage. Alternatively, it can be used with one rein by the means of a converter. The amount of leverage increases with the length of the shanks similar to a pelham. Swale bits offer even greater leverage and are designed for controlling strong horses that tend to pull or lean. The three copper keys on the mouthpiece encourage the horse to play with the bit. The copper material was strategically placed to have contact with the tongue, increasing the production of salvia and making it easier for the horse to accept the bit and less likely to take hold of it.
