The Swales Bit provides the same action as a double bridle but is less complex. This bit features loose movable rings over the mouthpiece for attaching the cheekpieces and does not exert pressure behind the ears, but rather emphasizes the action on the shanks to create leverage. The degree of leverage is determined by the length of the shanks. The Swales offers more leverage than a traditional pelham bit and is used in combination with a curb chain or chin strap. It is ideal for providing control over strong horses that tend to be heavy on the forehand and rider’s hand.
The Swales bit (also referred to as Pluko Bit) can be used with two reins: one on the loose rings for soft support, and the other on the bottom ring for leverage. Alternatively, it can be used with a single rein connected via a bridge. However, the Swale is not recommended for inexperienced riders or horses, as it can be quite strong.
