The locking elliptical center joint is designed to remove the action of the mouthpiece from being able to bend beyond a certain point. This also allows the mouthpiece to remain in a fixed position when engaged. In addition, the locking link prevents the mouthpiece from forming a V-shape that could rub the top of the horse's palate.
